Far Fetched Fables is currently closed for story submissions. Check back for future announcements.
Far Fetched Fables pays a US$50 flat rate per story. We only require non-exclusive one-time anthology rights as well as non-exclusive one-time audio rights to play your story. Any acceptances from this point on will be considered a paid publication.
FICTION SUBMISSION GUIDELINES — please read in full before sending us anything:
We welcome submissions from writers and artists of every race, religion, nationality, gender, and sexual orientation. Simultaneous submissions (i.e., submitting the same stories or artworks to other venues at the same time) are allowed. Multiple submissions are not allowed. One submission is allowed until acceptance or rejection before you are eligible to submit another. Any multiple submissions while the initial one is still under review will be ignored.
What We Are Looking For:
- Fantasy fiction stories (more on that below).
- Word count between 2,000 and 7,500 words.
- Reprints (more on that below, too)
What We Are NOT Looking For:
- Stories that don’t have a fantasy theme.
- Fan fiction
- Sex is fine, but hardcore erotica and torture porn are not
- Hate speech or bigotry… unless comeuppance is delivered to the character in some way.
- Font size: 12pt.
- Font type: Courier New or Times New Roman
- Double spaced
Submission Procedure: All fiction must be submitted by email. Please use the subject line “FICTION SUBMISSION”. Attach your story document to the email. In the body of the email, please provide the following details:
- Your name and pseudonym (if any)
- Story title
- Word count
- Any publishing history for reprints
- A short biography (100-150 words)
- Any pertinent web links
Response Times: Most submissions will receive a response within 30 days, although it could take more time for consideration purposes. Please do not respond to rejection letters. However, you can submit a different story at that time if you’d like.
Summary: Fantasy fiction is a broad and diverse genre, so feel free to push its boundaries. We’re open to just about anything: high fantasy, low fantasy, science-fantasy, horror-fantasy, sword & sorcery, magical realism, urban fantasy, steampunk, alternate histories, weird westerns, weird easterns, grimdark, YA and adult with a capital “A”, comedy, drama, and anything in between and/or way beyond. We welcome translations and are very interested in stories that take place/written by authors outside the US/Anglo-sphere, as well as as alternative movements and styles.
We’re built on reprints. In fact, we don’t accept anything but reprints. When sending your story, make sure you name the venue it was published at. This does NOT include vanity publications, self-published works, royalty-only, or FTL (for the love/non-paying) venues. We definitely want to see work published at venues that are semi-pro or higher. It’s definitely not limited to this list, but if the venue is here, then you’re good.
Basically, if you were paid for the work, or if the venue does pay, then it’s fair game. We can’t take anything previously adapted into audio publicly. If the audio narration is available publicly (this doesn’t include anthologized audiobooks), then it’s a no-go. If in doubt, send it anyway. Being a reprint podcast, we only use nonexclusive audio rights. You are free to do whatever you like with the story, but we must be the first ones to adapt it into audio.
